October 22: Gold and Silver End With Modest Gains

The Metals:

 

Gold saw a slight loss at $1721.30 by a little after 4AM EST, but it then climbed to as high as $1729.18 in New York and ended with a gain of 0.37%. Silver rose to as high as $32.434 and ended with a gain of 1%.

 

Euro gold rose to about €1324, platinum lost $10.50 to $1606.50, and copper fell a couple of cents to about $3.62.

 

Gold and silver equities traded mostly slightly higher and ended with a little over 1% gains.

The Economy:

 

There were no major economic reports today and there are none due out tomorrow.

Oil fell to the lowest level in two weeks as TransCanada Corp. (TRP) planned to restart the Keystone pipeline and Japan’s exports declined the most since the aftermath of last year’s earthquake.”

 

The U.S. dollar index traded mixed as the euro rose on an election in Spain while the yen fell on a drop in exports in Japan.

 

Treasuries fell ahead of this week’s $99 billion worth of note auctions.

 

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P traded lower for most of trade on poor earnings reports, but all three indices then edged back higher in late trade and ended with modest gains.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were Hasbro, FedEx, Rosneft, Caterpillar, and GrainCorp.
