Who Found Silver Coin Prices Under $30?

|
April 22, 2013 - 9:26am

Thanks to all of you for helping me win my bet...

The other day I was having a debate with a friend about where premiums would go in the short term -- after the big sell off.

As you know, there has been a ton of excitement about surging demand and signs of shortage.

Physical inventories have been tight for quite some time, but there has been inventory out there.

I believe what we could be seeing is a sell down of current inventory with some dealers (who can afford to bet that prices will rise) selling future deliveries at or around today's price.

It's a gamble for all, because everyone will have to wait.

And the waiting...well...

As the song goes, "The waiting is the hardest part".

We will soon find out whether this shortage is the real deal -- and soon thereafter, the trickle down into industrial demand might occur. At that point, it's a brave new world for all.

Here's a sample of what I received from subscribers (identity protected) in answer to my query about finding silver below $30 per ounce.

You might even find some good deals yourself!

Best regards,

Dr. Jeff

Here from Sydney Australia.

My dealer has been smashed with orders on both Gold & Silver. Long delays filling orders from one of the major dealers in the city.

We just see this whole situation as more buying opportunities.

Not much Australian Junk Silver around either. 50% or 92.5% Pre-decimal coins.

Still buying at $30 AU an Oz.

Don't care what the sicker price on the metal is anyway I am just stacking Oz's for the years ahead.

Let them print as much paper as they like we all know that cream always rises to to the top just as precious metals will always eventually rise to the top.

The Perth Mint is going flat out here and just cant keep up with demand. 2 weeks wait on 10 Oz Silver Bars.

Anyway Jeff, please keep up the great work as we all enjoy your emails.

Keep stacking and keep the faith. We will win the war. Let the Fed just keep printing by the Trillions eventually the world will say enough paper and true wealth will be measured in Oz's and Acres of land.

I was quote $23.40 plus a $4.00 premium for American Silver Eagles on Monday which was a 50 cent increase in premium.

****

I pick up my silver every week at a local coin shop which I found to be extremely competitive and know the owner personally, who seem to be a genuine guy.

Anyways, last to last (04/12) week Silver eagles went upto $4.25 over spot and was quickly gone. All the online places were out of silver or stocks were delayed. So I went for some 90% Dimes for the week which were going for $2.33.

Last Monday (04/15) again I went there to check it out and all Silver Eagles, maples were gone. They were selling the Golden State Buffalo rounds for $3 over spot. which I thought was very nice of them. But they were rationing them out 20 pieces per person. I picked up some of them and again went in Friday and picked up few more.

I'm not sure if they are hiding the silver eagles and maples and others and just have these generic rounds to keep the business afloat. But in any case, I think at $26 per ounce for a generic round is a hard to beat price and I'm thinking they probably are taking a mild losses hoping to cover it by placing a big inventory order at this price.

I do find your emails to be interesting read and informative. Good that you are staying away from speculations. Some do and I think it introduces anxiety in the mind of readers and during times like this it tends to ruin the writers credibility. Just a thought!

SOLDOUT!!!
I can't get anything from my dealer in El Segundo and he usually has 5 to 7 tons in stock. He will talk about anything when I go there but now he won't talk to me at all. He hides in the back room!

I will try to talk with a friend at Golden State Mint on Monday to see what he has heard and see what they have in stock.

Irreversible Ag Backwardation per Professor Antel E. Fekete?
Maybeeeee.....

Just bought $5000 junk silver at $28 silver spot Canadian.

****

I have been buying 10 oz. .999 Australian Kookaburras at Apmex this past week for around $270 (right now you can buy them for $268.30 which is approximately $27/troy oz.). The beauty of this coin is its numismatic value which seems to offer protection from wild fluctuations in the price of silver. In 2011, I bought many 10 oz. Kookaburras for $296 and now even after this week's paper derivative rout of the PM's, the 2011 Kookaburra is still selling for $343.30 at Apmex. I have also purchased many Australian 10 oz. Koalas in the past. BTW, purchasers of silver this past week apparently outnumber sellers by more than 50:1.

As to what happened this past week, it appears to me like a desperate attempt by the U.S. Government to lower the price of PM's. Who else could cover naked shorts of over 500 tons of gold on Friday 04/12/2013. Apparently, this bizarre financial activity was done through America's largest financial institution; none other than JP Morgan Chase Bank. My guess is that the Fed is trying to make the dollar look stronger before it actually undergoes a serious devaluation. The central banks globally which have been buying gold in record amounts appear to be preparing for a major change in the value of the dollar; 457 tons of Au in 2011 and 589 tons of Au in 2012 which are both record amounts. China appears actually to be hoarding huge amounts gold and keeping quite secretive about it. As the world's largest producer of Au and the world's largest importer of the yellow metal, my hunch is that they may have over 7000 tons of gold right now, even though the official Chinese Government statistic from 2009 was 1054 tons. Clearly, China and Russia seem to be preparing for a new international reserve currency (not the dollar) that will be somewhat backed by gold. Contrast this to the U.S. which is telling Germany that they will have to wait seven years to get their gold back! Sometimes you have to read in between the lines.

Keep up the good work Dr. Jeff.

Lexington,KY - LCS 4/20/2013
$25.00 generic rounds- about 20 available
$35.00 circ eagles- but... "none available"... of course,

Bought limited supply of rounds and 10 oz bars for $2.50 over spot at local coin shop Friday. They had plenty of 2013 Eagles for $5.00 over spot. The shop, which is normally very busy, was dead. Located in FL

****

Silver Bull selling Canadian Silver Maple Leaf at US$28.97 per ounce; spot at US$23.28 per ounce. That’s a $5.69 premium or 19.6% – a real hosing.

Northern CA Coin reported no silver eagles as of Monday, April 15, 2013.

A FRIEND TRIED TO ORDER SOME WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, AND WAS TOLD THEY ARE NO LONGER TAKING ORDERS.

The key to the "shortage" though, which I'm not sure is resolvable, is how many dealers actually have nothing in stock, and how many have a little, some, or plenty but they won't advertise/sell at paper prices that are below production cost and/or below what the dealers may have paid.

My guess is that SIlver Eagles are following the shortage/price scenario of ammo. Ammo shortages started in Nov last year and became acute this January. There generally is no "common" ammo on the market [in size] to this day. There are exceptions and occasionally some comes a long but it is snapped up in a heartbeat. I see prices for "target" 9mm that are four times what I paid about two years ago—no exaggeration. Rifle ammo .223/5.56 and .308/7.62 has generally doubled for the good stuff. Cheap (perfectly functional) .223/5.56 and .308/7.62 in some cases is up even more, percentage wise. Ranges and some gun shops offer a box or two frequently from an "off brand" supplier.

Bringing this back to silver, I don't think people will be able to buy silver eagles in size [say 1,000 coins) at anything less than say $75 per coin starting very soon.

In reply to your request: I found and bought 60 1 oz rounds for $24.05 each. The 50 oz bars I usually buy were out of stock so I bought the rounds instead. They were out of stock two days later but since have regained stock. Feel free to inquire more if you wish. I will look for your return with what the bet was all about.

Hello, in regards to your $30 dollar question, two of the major ebay sellers had buy it nows for under thirty. One was a generic round for 29.25. The other was a well known silver round for 29.95. Both offered free shipping. Im thinking of getting some more pretty quickly or I would give you more specifics. If you hunt, you can find them right now. That's all I know of though. Everything else on ebay has been going up towards 35 dollars an ounce, that's with shipping.

****

full blown shortages at the major dealers - statements like we are not selling anything until "everything settles down."

****

Some "deals" below $30 at Kitco and APMEX, but gone as fast as they come up. Saw "old" 2008 Olympic Maples Leafs for $25.52, but by the time I contacted a friend to discuss getting some, they were gone. Mark ups on Eagles and Leafs are $4.99-6.00+. Plus, Kitco isn't shipping much of nothing TO the US. Most of their good stuff is shipping only outside the USA.

****

Just seen that Provident metals has the Silver Eagles under 30 that does not however include shipping. Here is the link http://www.providentmetals.com/bullion/silver/us-slv/ase/brilliant-uncir... Cash price is 29.78 with the price from Kitco Kast 23.29 troy ounce.

No problem with my dealer of 25 years.
was able to order 1oz rounds at $1.50 over spot and Mapleleafs at $2 over spot
Eagles at $2.50 over spot in 100coin lots.
This was on Tuesday with silver at $23.40.

AMEREX $29 bullion bars

Yes, I have noticed a sudden "out of stock" on many of the items and/or a notice that they will not ship until after the first of May. I have not compared exactly, but my recollection is that the premiums have been tweaked up as well. Yet, some or nearly all of the special collectors items that probably have a very high mark up and a slower turnover are still "ready for shipment." I am looking from the outside and others, as I, are shopping to buy when the silver spot is down. Still it is very suspicious to me. Check out Gainesvillecoins.com and see what I mean.

****

in west Seattle the price was 23.26 plus the charge came to 25.28,

I was getting one, they went in the back to get it, since most are sold out,

it is getting slip pickings, mostly Indian heads.

this was dated 4/19/2013

I bought 2 100oz bars on Monday for $2427 each from APMEX.

****

Local shop I deal with (not to buy or sell though) is still selling at spot + $4 but they have no stock and are 4 weeks out minimum to receive more. The catch is if you want to lock in that price you have to prepay.

****

You can easily buy silver under $30 dollars at the NWT mint in Federal Way, WA. I live about 20 minutes away from the mint...
It says online that it takes 8-10 weeks for delivery, but what they don't tell you is if arrive at the mint in person, and buy it right then, you can get whatever they have "extra" of in stock that same day. You may not have access to many of the coins online...but you can always get something. I guess they must hold over some for in person sales. Usually its PanAm silver that you can always get. (However I must admit I have not been there this year, but have been there on other occasions during so called "silver shortages".)
And the guys who answer the 1-800 number don't work at the mint..so they don't actually know you can do this.

****

Have bought 90% silver coinage on Ebay for 25-29/oz... need to be patient and bid smart though

****

I went down to my coin dealer the other day and when I got there he only had about ten half dollar Cdn. junk Silver coins left along with a goodly amount of numismatic coins which I don't buy. He had no gold coins and no maple leafs or anything else. I was shocked. Within ten minutes his business partner walked in carrying an obviously heavy box. Lo and behold he had just purchased 400 "Wood Bison" pure silver coins from someone and I promptly bought 100 of those. If I had the money I would have bought them all. Silver was at about 23.65 at that time and I paid about 31.65 (8 over spot) but the wood bisons are about a buck more than Maple Leafs. I felt very fortunate to have been able to get them. That's the first time in dealing with them over the last 4 years where they were essentially cleaned out. I felt my timing couldn't have been better.

I found some 1 oz buffalo at JMbullion for 25.06 an ounce last week.

I buy from tulving. They appear to be fully stocked on their gold, but have
practically 0 silver inventory.
My impressions are that their premiums have not changed....
Love your stuff!

****

in answer to your email, the places I have checked are asking 30% and more above spot for silver eagles

****

Yes,

I have found silver selling for around $25 in 100oz bars that is available and in-stock, although much of the 100oz inventory is delayed or currently sold-out.

I have been looking since last Thursday morning and have found nothing under $30. Even the pawn shops are running between $30 and $33. Apparently the spread increased dramtically after the "crash".!

****

I should have added. Those JM bars from Apmex were that price "PLUS shipping." So depending on what you ordered (especially it were less than 5 ounces) the prices were still above $30.00 each total counting ship.

My 90% was a one time very small deal, and I actually miscalculated / misspoke a little in my first email. While it was a good deal it was not under $25.00 / oz it was a little over.

Bottom line, most if not all "physical" silver out there IS selling for $30.00 / oz PLUS!

You should win your bet whatever it was.

****

I buy me bullion from a local coin shop at a premium of $2.50 over spot. I go every month and the last time I was there I could only get about half of what I normally get because they were out. They only sell what they buy from others and they said no one is selling now.

I just bought silver rounds from Silvertowne at $26.10 per oz, with free shipping! They warn that “shipping times may be longer than usual,” but they say these rounds are in stock, along with other bullion coins and bars

I wanted to buy several hundred 10 oz silver bars but my usual dealers APMEX and Gainesville Coins both list alll of them as "Out Of Stock" on all except a few rarer ones priced from $31 to $41 per ounce. This is pretty much true also for all of their 100 t.o. bars. American silver eagles of course are way overpriced.
I've got a PM IRA and so pulled out 4X my Required Minimum Distribution (about 3000 American Silver Eagles) on the day silver was about $23 so I'll let the government take the loss on that transaction in taxes I'll have to pay. If the price of silver and gold remain low or get lower I may remove a lot more silver or gold before the end of the year. I'm basically buying gold and silver from myself.

With a paper trail, I like BullioDirect.com. They have a catalog and an exchange for trading, and all seem to be under $30.00. Very high premiums though. Won't touch silver at those premiums. Gold seems to be the better buy at this take down. Premiums around 4%.

Chinese Panda coins 2013.....good to buy or not? As investment.....the premiums are 6:25 an oz. Or stay with Maple Leafs or Eagles?

just ordered 30 ozt of Silver (in 10ozt bars) and 1ozt of gold (in 1/10 ozt Gold Eagles) from APMEX.com. they have everything in stock.

After a lengthy search friday night I have found one dealer selling silver eagles for over $25. This is the absolute lowest I've seen. Instead of ordering on line I will call them to verify that price. It just seems to good too be true.

I always deal with the same guy, I bought 200 junk dimes last week; he had a decent supply of junk dimes and quarters. Very few Eagles. A large amount of numismatic coins.I shopped before last Friday's takedown, so I don't know if he is selling for under $30; his policy was $2 over spot.

How are you ? Hey , I have several Silver Depository Accounts and at this time, I have been buying my silver from Silver Saver for a few pennies over spot. Of course when you go to take delivery there is a bit of premium depending on what you order but still wayyy cheaper than what is going at my local coin dealer, eBay, APMEX, Monarch, etc. They're all over spot by at least $7 or so from what I'm seeing.

With the Silver Saver accounts of course you have to have at least 20 oz in the account in order to take delivery. Again , this is the best that I've seen out there, just got 20 oz out last week from the depository in Delaware and it was 5 oz 2012 Silver Eagles, 5 oz 2013 Silver Eagles, 5 oz 2012 Canadian Maples, 5 oz Buffalo Rounds for a premium of about 1.95 oz or about $45.90 and if you divide that into 20 oz that comes out to about $2.30 per round over spot including shipping so that is still under the $30 premium the other guys are asking. Actually it was $25.84 per coin and round at a closing price from Silver Saver of $23.54.

****

I called Kitco yesterday since their website still had Eagles listed for sale here in Canada. The guy told me they would not take my order as they were completely out. I only wanted 100 of them. It really seems different this time with the shortage, I guess we'll see in a couple months.........

Found junk silver at Silvertowne. Purchased $50 FV for abt $1,000 – the best price I’ve seen online and via credit card, others much higher. 10 day delivery times. Many other items out-of-stock, e.g. Canadian maple leafs, long delays on US silver eagles. Prices on EBAY as usual excessive.

****

Select coins are $4 -$4.50 over spot for select coins (Silver eagles etc.) They ran out of Canadian Silver maple leafs etc. US gold Double eagles $65 over spot, $Gold Buffalos $70 over spot, Canadian Maple leafs $45 over spot – which represents NO increase in price since I’ve been buying for the last year or so from them.

Apmex still seems to have plenty of junk rolls at prices similar to before the knockdown. They have plenty of semi-numi rolls at stiff prices. MintProducts will sell junk mercury dimes and standing lib quarters at a $20+ discount to Apmex rolls when they have them but that price breaks down to the same price per coin when you bought a $100 bag from Apmex, so Apmex added a big premium when you bought rolls, although they did come in a plastic or paper roll marked with what they were on an Apmex label while MintProducts just sends them loose in a plastic Baggie.
I predict you will see junk coming back on the market massively when silver hits $40 again. There are plenty of people out there looking for a short term profit. I (or my children) plan to hold mine closer to the $100 level. Ha!!

****

My local dealer (coin and PM shop) here on Long Island, NY is short of all silver products. I do my buying on a bi weekly dollar cost average basis (I don't try to hit the highs and lows or market time... slow and steady investing has served me well) so I'm a regular customer and get great prices and special deals. This week he only had culled ASEs, about 20 2013 ASEs (he was limiting folks to 2/per for graduation season), some junk silver (halves only and a few dollars), and a 100oz bar. A lot less inventory than usual. I don't think he was holding anything back from me.

All products were under $30/oz with the premiums. The ASEs being the most expensive and costing $28.50 /per with premium. He offered me the 100 oz bar for $2550 but that's more than I can spend on my PM investment program. Really wish I could have picked it up!

I half wonder if the "shortages" at the big dealers is really them pulling products off the market until things settle and prices recover a bit! There's only so much they can make up on the price drop by boosting the premiums over spot. Buyers aren't stupid. The "premium" isn't meant to be a price protection for the seller that gets caught holding products in a down market as some of these dealers seem to think.

A local buy and sell shop I stop at now and then has no junk silver in the showcase as he usually has. When I spoke directly to the owner where it was he told me he can't sell it now.... he'd take a bath! I wonder if the shortages we're seeing with some of the major dealers are for a similar reason?

****

I have ask but i can,t get any coin for less then 29.50 but if i can give them a week or so i can get them for 25.oo if i order more them 100 oz. but i have to give them my money now I don,t like that game

Yes, im still able to get at under $30 from the Gold Reef Mint in Johannesburg, South Africa

Gainesville Coin down here in Florida for 90% silver coins is spot plus $5.99 which at present works out to $29.38. The $5.99 over spot seems to tell the story. Yes, silver eagles were selling for $29.79 ($6.00 premium) yesterday at one dealer in Salt Lake City. The only other dealer I could locate who had any stock on hand (said he had 6 or 7 eagles on hand) wanted $33 for each (approx. $9-$10 premium).

Not finding much, the local dealer had 8 rounds I was able to pick up on Wedneday for about 27 an oz after taxes. He had some Eagles for 33 a piece. That's all he had in the way of pure, he had some 90% silver dollars in the 33 dollar range. Only reason I was able to get the rounds at that price is because he bought them from some schmuck a couple hours earlier for 22.50 an oz.

Very am finding little if any junk or silver bullion below $30.00 - however... there are a very few deals on ebay for junk silver that can be had for $30.00 or below if one catches the right auction at the right time, but that certainly is Not the norm... I saw one auction selling $10.00 face for $455.07 OBO that also is not the norm - but high (over 31-33 range) asking prices for physical junk, it seems, remains the norm... regular dealers i.e. Apmex, Kitco are getting a minimum of $31.40 + per toz (generic or their rounds) + a hefty S/H... the Canadian Mint is charging and arm, leg and/or first born for their silver... have some numismatics but just a small %...

BTW, I Don't buy stock, ETF's and the like, only the physical variety... it's crazy out there and crazier by the day, but still, all things considered, believe I will buy just a bit more while the getting is still good... additionally, IMHO, even if paper silver continues to go down even lower, this will not lessen the price of the physical silver people are buying - as the overall faith of paper is eroding faster these days, for some some people - the proverbial light has turned on, rather brightly it seems... any bets / thoughts on when the vast majority of physical silver will pan out (only to be held by the informed few...???)... and how many ounces of gold ETFs' were converted to physical just in the past few days...??? if memory serves - tons... it's going to be and has been one hell of an interesting ride... as someone has stated "want gold? buy silver"... I can dig that... appreciate all your words of wisdom... and continue to enjoy the Lewis and Mariani Silver Letters...

On an added note, think most are sheeple, and like horses one can get them to the watering hole... baa, baa, and what are we doing here...??? :-))) Doc have a great weekend...!!!

Jeff you know that silver premiums are very high now, even on 90% silver currency. I have placed orders
for American Silver Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs; both are on back order. The last I saw ASEs are on backorder at Gainesville until 5/15. Even with the low spot price, I dont see premiums going down much,
or none at all. I also buy gold and all the fractional coins appear to be out of stock. Some of the 1oz bars are
out of stock. 1 oz coins do not appear to be an issue, yet. I like low premium gold coins like the Hungarian 100 corona
and the Mexican 50 peso centenario coins.

I am not worried or all or deterred by the low spot price of bullion. It just presents more buying opportunity.
The only problem now is the supply. But the supply and demand issue will help bring the prices back up.
We must continue to accumulate bullion as a safe haven, no matter what the pundits and experts say. I don't believe any of it and have fears for what is going to happen.

Thanks for the great articles and keeping us up dated on silver.

I was able to pick up silver maples for 28.25$ oz but with in hours of my purchase there website indicated they were sold out of maple and eagles. That was through Silver Gold Bull in Calgary Alberta Canada.

Hope you win your bet!

It isn't hard at all to find silver below 30.00... just about everything on providentmetals.com is under 30 an ounce..... They're on back order...but it can be ordered. Silver buffaloes for just over 25/ozt.

Hello Dr. Lewis- wow things are nuts. Per your request, I have two sources where I procure phys from. They're very reputable sound money folks- I'd considered them not-average lcs, they are under the radar ie non known, but do lots of business to regular folks.

These are prices as of 5 minutes ago for 1 of them

Hi. here is where I have bought my silver -http://silvergoldbull.com/silver-bullion-1/coins. As you can see some deals are under $30.

Local shop I deal with (not to buy or sell though) is still selling at spot + $4 but they have no stock and are 4 weeks out minimum to receive more. The catch is if you want to lock in that price you have to prepay.

Have bought 90% silver coinage on Ebay for 25-29/oz... need to be patient and bid smart though
